The fashion industry exists because they are able to convince people that they are ugly in their natural state and need to spend money to fix these natural inadequacies instead of using excercise and nutrition, the only real beauty secrets. Yep. Just try and convince most women that they look good with in their natural states and they won't believe you. The fashion/makeup industries telll them that they need to do themselvesw up to look good for men. Every man I know will say otherwise

: Why is it that when black women get their hair relaxed it's because they want : to try to be white and it's this big deal?  But when white women get perms, : it's just white women getting perms? I think it's not so much an issue of whiteness (though for some women it is) as it is being constantly told you have to be something different than who or what you are. Your experience, I might point out: is rare. Most women who consistently change the texture of their hair, whether white or black, experience alot of problems keeping it healthy. I think white woman more often feel they have 'options' with their hair, and the curly perms are not so harsh as relaxers. That doesn't mean they should perm their hair their entire lives. : Yeah, these are other things that I could do and keeping it straight is also : another choice.  Why should black women just be restricted to the choices you : mentioned above? I don't consider this 'restricted' at all. I personally don't understand why any woman would willingly rish nerve damage to the scalp, want to have the expenses, etc. Good for you if you don't have those.

Why is it that when black women get their hair relaxed it's because they want to try to be white and it's this big deal?  But when white women get perms, it's just white women getting perms? I bin making this argument for years and keep getting shouted down. Keep saying it, sister. Its the truth. White women do more to their hair than we could ever think up and nobody even breathes deep about it. Let us do one little thing and suddenly we ain't black enough. I keep mine short and curly (natural) because its easy. I don't have to worry about wind, rain and spending a lot of time in the morning (the laziness factor is big with me!). I can do it because of the texture. So I surely wouldn't sit in judgement on some other sister with a different type hair. The other thing is - I ain't looking for a job and I don't feel like I have to impress anybody. Those two things could easily change my mind. But for now.............. alice - Hide quoted text -- Show quoted text -

Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, DKNY, Nautica just a few names who make many millions from fashion-concious men who have a need to wear their name on their chests. I don't understand it, myself, but accept that other men have this need. If you don't understand it, how do you know it's not insecurity augmented by commercialism that focuses on looking a certain way as opposed to being a certain type of person? Also, isn't it kind of sexist to suggest that women have insecurities that can be exploited by the fashion industry (see your first paragraph) but for men it's some incomprehesible drive beyond your understanding? :< von ______________________________________________________________ It is better to be right and march into hell than to follow a bunch of fools into heaven...               Elementary School Teacher of John Henrik Clark http://www.czi.net/~redbai

I suggest that clothing _style_s would be different if women were responding to males tastes rather than female tastes. Well, Art I got to wonder where you live. Do you really think women wear 3 inch (or worse) heels because they like having their feet hurt? And these skirts that are so short they have to keep rearranging themselves when they sit, so people won't see their underwear? Do you actually think women spend time putting on makeup, getting facials, going to the gym, etc. to impress other women? Women do these things because they think men like  them. EXACTLY!!!  They *THINK* men like them. Women are notoriously bad at determining what weight, make-up level, etc. men will find attractive. As much as male beauty standards are blamed for such things as eating disorders, the ideal woman that the avg man describes weighs 20 pounds more than the ideal woman that the avg woman describes.
