What prevents someone from charging more than you gave them permission for?  I understand that debit cards don't even have the mininal protections against such fraud that credit cards do. What prevents someone you pay with a check from altering the amount? I always write the amount with a non-erasable pen, left-justify it, and immediately follow it with a long dash.  And I write it both in words and in numerals, in the spaces provided.  Any alteration should be easy to detect, especially if I call attention to it on getting my bank statement. The recipient of a check no longer has to present the check in either physical or image form to be paid. The information on the check gives them the ability to issue an Electronic Funds Transfer against your account for any amount they choose.         Robert

Swearing and/or all caps might be good indicators... And how often do I use either of those? The fact that you don't does not mean that you cannot. I don't use them either. I also make essentially no use of swearing or shouting in my ordinary conversation. Nor do I see any reason why I (or Keith) should conform to your rhetorical _style_ any more than I expect you to conform to mine. Wow. Just wow. Just HOW do you get that I expect him to conform to my rhetorical _style_ out of that? You have suggested his doing something

Anytime I've made a purchase over the internet, I get a confirmation   page which tells me to print it out or save it for my records.  THIS   would be my proof that someone altered the amount. But since it would be trivial for you to alter (or forge) the confirmation page, this is not proof which would stand up to any rigorous examination.

There's no doubt in my mind that the US *can* feed itself, though this may require that grains currently fed to food animals are consumed directly by people instead. If Michael Pollan's book _The_Omnivore's_Dilemma_ is to be believed, we   would be much better off taking the huge amounts of land dedicated to growing   grain (especially corn), and growing a more diverse set of crops on them.  We'd almost certainly all be healthier, especially the food animals, cattle and   other ruminants not being well-evolved to eat corn, but also humans if we ate   more (and more varied) vegetables, and less meat, especially corn-fed beef,   which is higher in intra-muscular saturated fat than grass-fed beef. (Also, the grains fed to animals are typically not varieties that people   would want to eat directly, although we do consume huge amounts of them in their processed forms, such as HFCS, maltodextrin, corn-derived vitamins, etc.)
