Solo the BC and I visited Penn's excellent behavior clinic yesterday. Luckily for Solo, my advisor in bio is married to Karen Overall, who some of you may have heard of.  ..... I wonder what happened to this poor guy (other than being in a kennel for almost a year of his one-and-a-half-year existence) to make him this way. Melanie, the sort of behavior you describe is distressingly common in unsocialized BCs. We call it Born In A Barn, and deal with it in similar ways as you indicate here. I use a clicker extensively on my dogs who are like this with excellent results. I like it because I can click those instants of behavior when they *are* relaxed, or not anxious

I was told that he preferred women to men, and have noticed that he is wary of large men, but he hadn't shown any aggression of any kind until now.  I can't do this. Yes, you can. Find a man that Solo's comfortable with, then go from there.  As was posted earlier, it sounds as if Solo received zero socialization. Before I got my Aussie, I did a lot of research - they share a lot of traits with Border Collies, and protectiveness is one of them.  They'll bond with one person, and attempt to protect that person from anyone and anydog.  This aggression *may* be a sign that Solo is bonding with you. I've run across 2 man-disliking dogs in the past.  I don't know whether to be happy or upset when they liked *me*.
