writes: The NSW Transport Minister Carl Scully has announced that trains will stop at 11.45 pm on New Years eve and resume at 12.15 am in the city underground area, probably quite a sensible idea if one is not sure about the reliability of power supply and signalling, particularly with underground stations. He's more confident than me that they will resume at 12.15, if there's a bug about it will take more than 15 minutes to find it and fix it. I don't see why this has to occur. All Tangara trains are already y2k-ok (I know - I've tested a few myself). Somehow I think there will be a very large If the train describer in Sydne signal box is not already y2k-complient, then it just shows that the people who control the operation of that (and Its not the trains, or the signals, or the supervisory computer systems in Sydney Box. Sydney Electricty, the wholesale distribution companies and the generation companies up the supply chain are not guarenteeing continuty of supply. Your Tangara might be y2k ready, but if something in the power supply chain between your Tangara and Eraring Power station isnt, you will have a y2k OK train that is completely useless. Pacific power is actually worried that stopping every train might actually trigger a massive failure event. The sudden shedding of load on the grid could cause more problems than a couple of non-y2k switch yard computers that short out their yards and blow the circuit breakers for that zone. AC power systems is a subject I know just enough about to know I dont want to work in that area. It's a complex field.

It would appear Cityrail's fears are not their computer systems or the signalling. The system can operate, abit slowly with out the supervisory computers and in a pinch the trains could run 'on sight' like a tramway, but if the electricity grid hickups, you have trains without power, in tunnels with minimal battery emergency lighting, and packed stations with minimal battery emergency lighting. If Wynyard or Town Hall plunged into darkness with a crowed platform of party goers, of whom a significatant portion are intoxicated on various substances, ensuring paniced riot could claim a significant number of lives. If the electricty grid does hickup, it is going to take more than 15 minutes to do a cold start. They havent actually done a cold start of the system before. Some people claim a cold start might not be even possible!. (The big power stations need a smaller one to 'boot' them. If the grid shuts of, and the power stations shutdown, where will the power come to restart them ?. There is a lot of switch gear to manually control to get the Hydro in the Snowy switched to the Hunter to get the biggies online.)

I just rang my father to ask him about this as he was an engineer for the Electricity Commission and later Illawarra County Council (now Integral Energy). He said to cold start a thermal power station you would use a diesel gen-set to provide power for the auxiliaries, eg fans for the boilers, oil pumps to float the turbine bearings and all the appropriate control gear. He also said they could turn on the hydro station at Warragamba, NSW (which he worked on during construction) to provide some power to the grid to get the thermal stations running. He also mentioned that most power stations have banks of batteries to provide DC when starting as the circuit breakers use a DC closing supply. as the circuit breakers use a DC closing supply. AFAIK the batteries must start the diesel generator which starts the gas turbine which can then start the Thermal Power stations. (In the Latrobe Valley that is).

About 6 or 7 months ago Eastern Energy Lost a major part of the Wodonga power Grid at about 3.00pm This was during a severe electrical storm, and an unusual cold snap. I would think that Energy usage in both Domestic and Commercial areas would have been high! The grid tried to reset about a minute after, and failed. Approx a minute after it failed again......then nothing. I was heading for the meter box, after turning everything off in the house when it failed the second time. I turned the power off at the Power board, by tripping all the circuit breakers and attached a lead to the emergency power point on the board and placed a light in a position where I could see it, when power was restored. It took them nearly three hours to restore the power! Eastern Energy needed to gather together enough people to travel all around the town and trip the Circuit Breakers for each local area. They then restored power, one section at a time till the whole Town was again connected. I rang Eastern Energy, and was told that in a major blackout like this, they rely on their customers to switch every thing off, so that they can restore power. I knew that, because as an ex Spark Driver, our instructions were to wait some time after power was restored, before operating the train normally. EG Up trains waited a minute before applying power, or something like that. It is interesting that Eastern Energy have not given us [the public] any instructions as to what to do if this ever happens again. Would you not think that a leaflet could have been included in our 'bills' to show us how to avoid this in the future? Rod
