Side note:  Have either of you seen the movie 'Heaven Can Wait' with Warren Beatty as a professional quarterback? I have watched it now, and was quite disappointed by it, and don't see how it adds to this discussion. In HCW the soul and memories were transported in two different bodies. First that rich guy, then that sportsman who were shells without ghosts after they died . In the last body the memories were wiped after a while (against his consent what also equals murder here) and we only have the original soul remaining. And the fact that the ending was supposed to be a happy ending just pissed me off. Yes. There's a lot of double dealing going on in HCW.  Apparently if Joe had chosen Farnsworth as a permanent body earlier, the murder would have been prevented.  Frankly, I wish he'd kept Farnsworth; seeing what he'd have done with the money and power would be a *lot* more interesting that having him win a ball game, and then lived mind-wiped. And what you said about who is in there now at the end.  Joe is apparently stuck in there, since they say they'll see him again in 50 years (or whatever it was).  Is his dead buddy in there?  His memories are.  They made the trainer doubt his sanity.  What's the point of your soul being trapped for decades if you aren't aware?  *Is* Joe aware, and screaming to get out, literally damned? All in all that was a really sadistic ending to a movie I otherwise enjoyed. Cross-post added to rec.arts.movies.past-films and subject altered; maybe somebody there has some insight.

You guys are misremembering this movie. Joe doesn't get to keep Farnsworth, regardless. Farnsy is doomed. No, his dead buddy isn't in there. He's dead. He went to heavan probably. It was 'his time'. Joe thinks he's his dead buddy and gets to live out the rest of his life as a Superbowl winning quarterback of the LA Rams. Just like he was supposed too. The fact that he's still attracted to Julie Christie indicates there's still a little of Joe in there. He just doesn't remember. Joe isn't John Cusack in Being John Malkovich.

I agree.  Joe's soul absorbed Jarrett's memories when Jarrett's soul went to wherever it went. When Joe asked Mr. Jordan if he could do it temporary, and Mr. Jordan said yes, it was clear Mr. Jordan knew that Farnsworth didn't have much time left.  If Mr. Jordan had replied that they could not do that, they would have went on to another potential death.  As Mr. Jordan said, they were running out of bodies for Joe to enter that fit what Joe was looking for. Why Joe/Farnsworth kept his wife and right hand man around him after they tried to kill him was beyond me; if I were Joe the first thing I would have done is banished them from the premises and beefed up the security, or kept them around with a security detail to make sure they didn't try to kill him again.  I think Farnsworth was doomed, but Joe was doing his part to disrupt the timeline so to speak, with the way he was unwittingly destroying the corporation with the things he was doing, such as buying the Rams at a ridiculously inflated price, and destroying the stock value of the company with his antics.
