twitches Depakote & muscle twitches
I have now been on Depakote for 24 hours.  Today I took two naps of 3 hours each.  When I woke up from the second nap I noticed that my muscles in my arms and legs were twitching...just little twitches (what the heck is a little twitch...well, it differs from a big twitch! ). In other words, small areas of a muscle, let's say in my leg, will twitch.  Then a small area of a muscle in my arm will twitch...and on it goes around my body.  You wouldn't notice it by looking at me, but I feel it. Is this normal?  I know this drug is given to stop epileptic seizures.  Does it lead to seizures by taking this drug?  Will my muscle twitches stop eventually? Or is this what I have to look forward to...and will it get worse?

for about 5 months, and I have been off it for about 3 months now. I got muscle twitching while on it and I still have it........ I asked my pdoc about it yesterday and he said that the depakote could have caused it and perhaps still does. I am a bit annoyed that I still have it- it freaks me out because its involuntary.

It does not lead to seizures and has been used as a mood stabilizer successfully for sometime now.  I can understand how you might worry about seizures if you are getting those twitches. I did not experience any muscles twitches that I remember ( I might not have noticed something like that as I don't worry too much about minor things), but that doesn't mean that you haven't had them.  I do have occasional muscle twitches, but I have always had them so they are nothing new.  It happens around my eyes and in my arms. You will be very sleepy on Depakote for the first week or so until your body becomes adjusted to the med.  I've been on it for a year now with no side effects, no sleepiness (after that first week) and good results with my depression.

I'm glad they are gone now.  It does sound like they may have been from the meds, but if they are gone now hopefully they will not be a problem in the future.  I do know that I am most often successful on very small doses of meds although I take a number of them in a cocktail.  When I was prescribed 1000 mg initially I was really concerned.  It seemed like such a high dose until I was able to look the med up on the net and see that it is always prescribed in the 100's or more.  In my experience, I just kinda live with a side effect for a little while (if it isn't life threatening which fortunately has never happened to me) and see where it is going before I take any action.  So far no side effects have stayed with me long enough nor have been severe enough for me to make a special call to my doctor. I hope the Depakote works as well for you as it has for me.
