<!doctype html public -//w3c//dtd html 4.0 transitional//en <html I would like to compile a list of movies with trains included either as a major part of the scene, or as an incidental. Also would like to know your favourite train movie. From my files: ======================================================= Subject: List of Railway Movies Organization: SoftQuad Inc., Toronto, Canada Date: Mon, 5 Sep 94 09:18:06 GMT The list is restricted to what I like to call Railway Movies of the First Kind:  those where the railway aspect can be considered one of the most important elements in the movie.  Normally trains or tracks or subways or stations or railway construction or railway employees will be in the movie for well over half its length.  There are a few exceptions _base_d on our discretion. Some examples of movies with notable railway scenes which nevertheless do NOT qualify for the list are:  Strangers on a Train, North by Northwest, Brief Encounter, Go West, The Seven-per-cent Solution, Doctor Zhivago. Movies of less than feature length (say 75 minutes, or somewhat less for older films) are also excluded.   TV-movies are included. With the above criteria in mind, I am always interested in hearing about additions or corrections to the list.  (For instance, some of the decisions as to whether or not to include a movie were _base_d on capsule summaries in various movie guidebooks, and these can be misleading.  Running times for movies as shown on TV can be quite misleading due to commercials and editing.  Also, silent-era films are sometimes shown today at a different rate of _frame_s per second from what was intended.) The list was originally compiled by Mike Trout, who is no longer on Usenet, and is now maintained by me, Mark Brader.  Some entries were taken from the list of movies that either take place on trains or feature memorable train scenes given in The Movie List Book: A Reference Guide to Film Themes, Settings, and Series , by Richard B. Armstrong and Mary Willems Armstrong (1990, McFarland, ISBN 0-89950-240-7); other entries on their list were rejected according to the above criteria, or because I guessed they would not meet the criteria. How about: Back to the Future III How the West was Won Sullivan's Travels (1942) The Greatest Show on Earth All of these have major sequences with trains. There is one I can remember but cannot verify.  I think it's Night Train to Berlin .  It's not to be confused with Night Train to Munich (1940). Night Train to Berlin is set in post war Germany.  It centers around an American, an Englishman, a French woman and a Russian army officer who are indirect witnesses to a murder of a German who has the solution to the whole problem in Germany (or something to that effect).  Very post war unity so it must have been made shortly after the war.  Anyways, they are on the train for at least half the movie.
