HI,     I went to petco today and they had some fish called Red Zebra and one called Cobalt Zebra.  What would the Scientific names for these two fish be?  Could I put these two together?  The guy at petco said that ph of 8.2, temp of 80, very hard water, and salt.   How much salt, ratio? Is there anything else I should know? Thanks Bluewasp

Red Zebra is pseudotropheus estherea. Cobalt Zebra is probably pseudotropheus zebra.  You can put the two together, they are both from Lake malawi.  I use a half tabls. of salt per 5 gallons, you can use up to a whole tbls. per 5 gallons.  (I reduced mine because I have clown loaches in there  with them.) Estherae and P. Zebra - totally compatible, and will probably crossbreed if M/F. I use cichlid salts for my tank, don't remember amount offhand - follow label directions...Meg

HI,     I went to petco today and they had some fish called Red Zebra and one called Cobalt Zebra.  What would the Scientific names for these two fish be?   Get ready for a shock, folks!  They've actually changed the names of Pseudotropheus zebra, the first and original African cichlid!!  The new genus name is Maylandia.  If you don't believe me, see M.K. Oliver's The Cichlid Fishes of Lake Malawi, Africa page at: http://www.connix.com/%7Emko/mw09000.htm.  They also grouped Livingstoni (the shell dweller), Hajomaylandi (aka P. Greeberi, the talking Pseudotropheus), aurora, and crabro (the bumblebee) into this genus.                                         Fred
