Smaller films that don't rake 'em in will be harder and harder to find. And yet, I find that it's getting easier and easier to find smaller films. 'Ma Vie En Rose' and 'Fast, Cheap & Out of Control' were just on pay-per-view. Local video stores bring in copies of just about every film released theatrically. The mainstream theaters near me seem to be slowly expanding their selection, bringing in prints of movies like 'The Spanish Prisoner' and 'Kundun'. I mean, at the moment things seem to be looking pretty good, if you ask me.

It's not as if he's under contract to a procudtion company and has to take the roles they throw at him, he's either picking which movies he would like to do to safeguard his limited abilities or being picked for them by directors for a certain quality, qualities that are directly in conflict with what is needed for Norman. Exactly, they PLAN it out in B & W, whether or not it was forced on them, the film is in B & W and was planned to be shot in B&W. It's not as if filmmakers devise a whole bunch of sets and costumes for a glossy Technicolor picture than at the last minute just keep all the plans for color and shot in B&W. If someone was forced to shoot in B&W, they will try to design their lighting, sets and costumes for B&W, not for color. Shooting in B&W and shooting in color require two entirely different approaches.

It seems to me we don't need a quote from Hitchcock to clear it up; all we have to do is look at his other movies. Was he ever THAT stylized in any other film? The answer is no, except for a few dream sequences here and there. Extreme stylization in Hitchcock = a few dream sequences here and there? What happened to the use of an inordinate number of shots to depict a woman being stabbed to death? Or the allowing of a nattering woman's voice to dim until we can't make out what she's saying except for one distinct word - Knife - to express the muddled confusion in a young woman's panicking mind. Or the revolving of two embracing protagonists while the room magically 'transforms' into a prior scene's backdrop right before our eyes to express vertigo. Or the use of images of 'opening doors' as a surrealistic comment on a kiss. Or the displaying of a grisly strangling reflected and distorted in the victim's glasses. Or ... etc. These are all incredibly *unrealistic* (anti-realistic?) methods of expressing ideas and characters' thoughts and emotions. So the answer to your question is yes, he was that stylised in other films, sometimes more so. Fergal Hughes.
