HUNGRY CHILD' FEEDS POPULIST FOLLY By ROD DREHER New York Post http://www.nypost.com/08222000/commentary/10440.htm There was a lot of populist rhetoric at last week's Democratic National Convention, but nothing was more heart-breaking to hear than the story of the Hungry Child Waiting Her Turn to Eat. Minister dispels fears of 'kidney thieves' The Times of India http://www.timesofindia.com/today/19mahm3.htm Brushing aside rumours of 'kidney thieves' on the prowl, state social justice minister Mangubhai Patel told villagers of Ganesh Sisodra, about 8 km from here, on Thursday that the rumours were the work of vested interests. Oops Letters New York Press http://www.nypress.com/content.cfm?content_id=2522&now=08/22/2000&con... Not being a stickler for journalistic integrity, I usually don’t have a problem with writers doing a little pilfering here and there. But Toby Young’s latest ( Taki’s Top Drawer, 8/16) crosses the line, especially with all the heat you guys have given Mike Barnicle for similar offenses over the past few years. I’m afraid you have a Barnicle on board yourselves. Mr. Young’s little tale, about being in a British ice cream parlor with Tom Cruise when a womansupposedly so overcome by Cruise’s presence/handsome looksdeposits her cone into her purse and leaves the store, is one of the oldest urban legends going. Young: I promise to be more skeptical in the future Jim Romenesko's MediaNews Letters http://www.poynter.org/medianews/letters.htm I plead guilty but with mitigating circumstances. I was originally told the story by a friend who swore he'd witnessed the whole thing with his own eyes. Consequently, when I came to write about it I thought I was relating a story that was 100% accurate. The reason I told it as if I'd seen it myself was simply to make it more dramatic. :Young: I promise to be more skeptical in the future :Jim Romenesko's MediaNews Letters :http://www.poynter.org/medianews/letters.htm : : I plead guilty but with mitigating circumstances. I like Toby Young's classic summing-up of vectoring on the same page: When my editor at The Press called to say a reader had identified my story as an urban legend I went back to my source who admitted that he hadn't in fact witnessed it but had been told it by someone who swore he had. He'd then done exactly what I did

She sure looks like Annette Bening And Marisa Tomei really did win that acting Oscar Roger Ebert http://www.nationalpost.com/search/story.html?f=/stories/20000818/374... Q. Many have remarked on the Columbia logo lady's striking resemblance to Annette Bening. Did my eyes play a trick when the logo came up before What Planet Are You From? or was she changed to actually be Annette Bening? (Steven P. Senski, Plover, Wis.) And yet, and yet.... Just last week Entertainment Weekly (every bit as voracious as the National Post) mentioned the Annette Bening/Columbia thing and stated unequivocally that they morphed the actual Ms Bening's face into the logo in What Planet Are You From? ...they further explained that people have been commenting on the resemblance for some time now.... I first noticed it myself when I saw The American President and wondered if somebody was up to something then...EW's article was the first time I'd heard that this was widespread.... R H hey, maybe Bogey really *was* the Gerber baby! Draney

Didn't some woman claim that the (original) Columbia logo was her image, and sue, and Columbia decided to change their logo and pay the person they modeled it after? http://www.reelclassics.com/Studios/Columbia/columbia.htm says: The model for the lady with the torch in the old Columbia Pictures logo (above) was an actress from the 1930s named Claudia Dell. To the best of my knowledge, in the new logo for Columbia Tri-Star Pictures (updated in the mid-1980s), the lady with the torch is no one in particular. A search on Claudia Dell came up pretty sparse, but one interesting hit reminiscent of an urban legend: http://www.sepnet.com/rcramer/crime2.htm The Midnight Warning (1932) A woman (Claudia Dell) checks into a hotel with her brother, who later disappears. Hotel personnel then insist that she checked in alone, and try to convince her that she is insane. Interesting story with a shock ending. Also with William (Stage) Boyd and Lloyd Ingraham. $14.95 Usually in the telling it is a newlywed husband who checks into a hotel with his wife and she goes missing overnight, or she goes into a store and doesn't come out and the clerks say she was never there.  One version has him discovering her years later with missing body parts or completely out of it having been used for nefarious purposes. Anyway, I don't think it looks terribly much like Bening.  The face is too wide, for one thing. JoAnne it looks more like Grace Zabriskie to me, but it ain't Grace Zabriskie either Schmitz
