We have become so accustomed to having lights and everyday accessories that it is difficult to imagine what it would be without it. There was a blackout here a few days ago and it took over 24 hours to get the power back on. All of the stuff in the refrigerator and freezer were warm and we burned our candles down within 3 hours. Everything else here is electric too, so we weren't prepared for cooking.   The whole thing was not a good experience. There is an excellent eBook written by an angry design engineer. The book tells the average Joe how to create power to your house and outbuildings using stuff from a junkyard and Home Depot. Very handy in a blackout or more serious situation. All of the stuff in the refrigerator and freezer were warm Get a better fridge.  Even the cheapie at my old apartment kept stuff frozen for 48hrs while some work was being done, and that was in Texas summer heat with the A/C off too.

Why are there no photographs of stuff you going to show us how to build? If it's so simple you can't show us the photographs without giving it away free, then why do we need an engineer to show us how? What does your book have that I can't find on the net for free?? There is gobs of free stuff on the net if you just do enough digging. Your little ebook obviously isn't worth $12.95

This is the funniest thread on usenet I have ever read.  All those years of wading through troll posts have paid off with this thread of pure genius. It does suck to have no electricity but an ebook is not the answer. Believe me, when the power collapses having a book to read is priceless. The lack of stimulation and distraction of the tv/computer is very hard to deal with.   When the hurricane came through we were out of electricity for 7 days. I sat on the front porch drinking spiced rum watching the neighbors drive around the block.  These people were trying to live in their cars,it was their handhold to civilization. The roads were impassable for 2 days, finally someone chainsawed through all the downed trees so there was at least one way out! I can rough it but I found myself driving to friends who had electricity to make ice and have a shower.   It was miserable I must admit but then I don't even have a generator. I have well water and a woodstove here so I am better off than most if the worst happened. I have a 410 and there are plenty of deer.  The thing is I just live hand to mouth and don't have the money to stay properly prepared.  If money were no _object_ I would love to get off the grid and be prepared for disasters.
