hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy Bug#548218: lintian: another wrong “weak-library-dev-dependency” error?
Package: lintian Version: 2.2.17 Severity: normal Hi, I am building new libkpathsea{-dev,4} packages. Up to now there was a dependency only         libkpathsea-dev depends libkpathsea4 THe lintian warning above triggered a change in my _script_s so now I have         libkpathsea-dev depend libkpathsea4 (= version-of-both_packages) but I still get the warning. Is there something wrong in my understanding of that error message? That is already with lintian 2.2.17, so it is not bug 547773. libkpathsea-dev_2007.dfsg.2-7_amd64.deb:  new debian package, version 2.0.  size 164858 bytes: control archive= 4043 bytes.      454 bytes,    13 lines      control     4040 bytes,    61 lines      md5sums     4933 bytes,   172 lines   *  preinst              #!/bin/sh  Package: libkpathsea-dev  Source: texlive-bin  Version: 2007.dfsg.2-7  Architecture: amd64  Maintainer: Debian TeX Maintainers < This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it  Installed-Size: 640  Depends: libkpathsea4 (= 2007.dfsg.2-7)  Section: libdevel  Priority: optional  Homepage: http://www.tug.org/texlive  De_script_ion: TeX Live: path search library for TeX (development part)   This package contains the static library and header files for the   Kpathsea[rch] library. ... Thanks and all the best Norbert

What's in the source control file?  That check is done against the source, not against the binary package, and expects (= ${binary:Version}).

What's in the source control file?  That check is done against the source, not against the binary package, and expects (= ${binary:Version}). Ah, ok ... since we auto-generate all those files I did put in directly the right version (= 2007.dfsg.2-7) into the source control file. I will change that. Thanks. But still I guess that you should allow that someone puts the actual version number into the control file. Best wishes Norbert

But still I guess that you should allow that someone puts the actual version number into the control file. Doesn't that break binNMUs? Hmm, didn't think about that. Probably yes, but binNMUs would ahve to change the version number. Anyway, I am retitling/re-severiting the bug to tell devs in the de_script_ion to use ${binary:Version} (I wouldn't have known that without your remark). Thanks Best wishes Norbert

Anyway, I am retitling/re-severiting the bug to tell devs in the de_script_ion to use ${binary:Version} (I wouldn't have known that without your remark). I would actually re_title_ it to request a check that looks for hardcoded version numbers on packages provided by the same source package. Cheers,
