it's a bit of a story, but i'm looking for some opinions here.. i've got a 6 year old dog who's border collie/heeler/lab as far as we (or anyone) have been able to tell.  when we brought her home she was a year and a half old and had already been through three homes (at least).  in the beginning she would have incredible mood swings

so is it possible for dogs to be schitzophrenic?  does this sound like any sort of neurotic disorder anyone has heard of?  she's had her blood sugar levels, etc, tested.  most of the time she's a happy dog, but she goes on binges where her eyes become glazed and her ears stay flat against her head most of the time, and she growls at everything. these last a few days, and then she's fine again.  we've had marginal success treating her with st. john's wort, but this tends to sedate her, which isn't what we were aiming for. sorry for writing a book on here.. does anyone have any thoughts/advice/experience/stories?  i do tons of work with dogs myself, and have never come across a case like jessie's... maybe someone has? Yes, and it wasn't because of a psychological disorder in the dog.   I think that you need someone to come in person and evaluate the situation - a good trainer to look at what is happening and explain it.  And odds are the explanation ain't gonna be because the dog's schizo or has some other psychological disorder.   You need to first protect the puppy.  That means that you do need to keep them separate for the moment, no matter how nicely they play 90% of the time.  It wouldn't take much for the puppy to get it's skull punctured or it's neck broken. The second thing you need to do is to call around to some trainers who work with aggressive dogs.  Explain the situation you have with the older dog vis-a-vis the puppy and let them take it from there.  No matter how much work you do with dogs, sometimes it takes an outside opinion to see what is going on and make recommendations. Alright, don't start kidding yourself here.  The dog has definite potential for a problem.  Your words - ... she bit hard enough to draw blood
