sound like a deal at $1000. How about it, does anyone have *real world* experience with current versions of both packages? Let's hear! Well .... this is what I said about Intel boxes. Compared to a professional solution, bla bla bla. I still love my SGI's and OS/2, but ya know ? Visual Mill is probably 90% as capable as Surfcam for a hell of a lot less. That's just how computing is. And yeah, Surfcam is five axis - IF you do five axis work and IF you buy the much-more-expensive fifth axis addon. Surfcam and Mastercam will have to drop their prices or in the long run, they're toast. Even Pro/E and Unigraphics have had to come way down on price. I have a Facit 4070 that once cost $4,000, too. If they weren't worried they wouldn't be putting the muscle on their dealers. Pretty shitty trick but I know all the software houses do this in other fields, so it's not a surprise. If Al Capone were alive today he could become a professor at Harvard Business School.

If Surfware treats it's dealers this way, I wonder how they would treat a customer? BTW, Those viruses stopped being sent to me (there were only a few more). I expect someone's ISP helped them or blocked them. You see anything? Are you accusing me of sending you a virus again? Real funny Cliff. My ISP has installed a new AV screener on all incoming and outgoing email as of very recently. I couldn't send you a virus if I wanted to, first my system scans all incoming and outgoing email then my ISP does the same again. Visualmill is putting their foot in every door possible, is trying harder not what they should do? What if Bill Gates decided to charge you $12,000.00 for a seat of Windows so he could be here for a long time and offer support? You would think that it makes the software better? I don't think it makes it better it just means that it costs more. With all the CAM technology available today you wish to continue to pay high prices for what is now reasonably old and common technology? Do you work for Surfcam? Michael

Surfcam can program lathes for a hefty price. I expect many vendors will throw in options to make a sale. IF done up-front rather than later as an add-on. I made a post several months ago asking what percentage of your shop's work is 5 axis? . If I remember correctly most answers were that they don't do any 5 axis, a very few said they do a small percent of their work in 5 axis. Cliff, you are once again trying to take a discussion about a current cam system off into a different area where you can poke at the capabilities. ***Cliff, you don't even program in 3 axis, in fact you no longer program anything but a keyboard in a newsgroup.*** You supposedly once programmed in 5 axis so you think every shop must do what you did? I know a few shops who closed after trying to go 5 axis as the expense was never justified, maybe someone told them that 5 axis was *THE* way to go. If you are going to spend a million bucks on a machine, you better have a contract for the work. It is sad to see you blowing about 5 axis every day and most 5 axis cnc are running 3 axis capable jobs the bulk of the time. That was also noted in the thread I had posted. In these days you better stay lean and mean with shop expenditures or you *absolutely will NOT make it*, that was why I went to Visualmill, the system is sound and paid for itself very quickly. Your dinosaur mentality would be to buy a few 5 axis cnc's, install Sun Microsystems computers, get some over rated overpriced CAMware and start a job shop. It is obvious you rode the aircraft industry and the government's bloated contracts during your career, riding the system may have worked for you but today we are all paying for the decades of free rides. No wonder you are out of work. Michael

Dear Clueless, I suspect it's very hard to make a 5 axes system out of a 3 axes one. Probably would need an almost total rewrite from the ground up. Maybe, maybe not. It all depends on whether 5 axis is where you planned to go in the first place, and if it was part of the original design. Software bursts onto the market with nifty features, and nice GUI, but not all the functionality needed. After a bit development slows as the original design/implementation starts to bite and it becomes harder and harder to modify. And you have a user _base_ resistant to change. But unless you are prepared to throw away the earlier work and start again you ossify. If everything has to be ditched the cost of doing so can be horrendous.
