little people recalle Pre-Columbian Indigeous royal Pedigrees
Since the Spanish destroyed a Mayan library that may have been the equal of Alexandria, there is little left. I have not looked at the translations of the Popol Vuh for awhile, but there may be some information in that. Moving to the north, however, there is extensive information on the Aztec royal lines, admittedly an entirely different culture and language from the Mayans, and there are people alive today who can trave their ancestry to some of them.  Extensive records were kept by both the Aztecs themselves and by the Spanish, especially when children who were mixed were born. . . . if only we had something (anything), from farther north yet, at Cahokia. taf You might check the writings of Thomas Jefferson. Although not at Cahokia (in East St. Louis, Illinois), there were mounds of the same period on his land that were still being visited by indigenous people. I recall dimly reading something about them that he wrote; he is widely regarded as the father of American archaeology although there was no such thing at the time. Also there is some thought that Cahokia and other mound clusters were a northern outpost for people from Mesoamerica; some of the artifacts suggest that connection. could these reflect strictly a trade relationship? It is possible that some written record will emerge from Mexico or Guatemala. I think I read awhile ago that some ancient codices are coming out of hiding... I believe that the mound-builder tribe/nation that survived until the palefaces was the Natchez. I also believe that social anthropologists/archæologists believe that the Cahokia royalty was hereditary.  This may be _base_d upon what they found among the Natchez.  I don't recall whether it is supposed to be matrilineal or patrilineal. could these reflect strictly a trade relationship? Yes, and they probably do. When they are referred to as northern outposts of Mesoamerican peoples, it is with that thought in mind. There was no known attempt to colonize the region for settlement, as was done in Mexico and points south, but there was certainly trade. In fact, Mesoamerican artifacts from the trade routes, such as copper bells, routinely show up in pre-Columbian sites as far north as the Canadian Rockies and as far west as Washington. There is no way to know if Mesoamerican traders actually took them that far in person, although it is well known that traders from Mexico came into what is now Colorado and Utah with such items. It should also be recalled that there are many First Nations in the western US who speak languages closely related to Nahuatl (Aztec) and, in California especially, speakers of Penutian languages that are related to Mayan. The Hopi in northern Arizona have a traditional account of ritual migrations from which several groups broke off to continue south, not recognizing the sacred place that had been set aside for them. These were the Aztec and related Uto-Aztecan speaking people of Mexico. The Hopi regard them as clans that did not stop migrating when they were supposed to. I'll stop now - I miss teaching.
