Casting is so difficult. Fans see the characters in their own mind... and most of the time it's nothing like the producers vision . I think I was most depressed when I saw the casting for Stephen King's The Stand . I've hesistated getting the illustrated books on Pern for the simple reason that I didn't want to be dissapointed. Don't put off getting The People of Pern on that account! Sure, not everyone matched my vision, but Master Robinton is absolutely perfect, and many of the other main characters are wonderful, too. I adore the picture of Mirrim, just after she Impressed Path. Robin Wood is a fantastic artist (have you seen her Tarot deck?) and it helped me visualize a lot of the characters I hadn't really filled in well in my mind. My only big disappointment was Menolly, who looked kind of washed-out. That's probably because I have an absolutely fabulous print of a painting of Menolly by a different artist (it's signed Victoria and dated '84). She's by the seashore, perched on a rock, her feet dangling in the water, strumming a gitar with a distant look in her eye as if she's completely within the music. Piemur is leaning against her rock, drum between his knees, his eyes on the firelizards playing in the water and dining on fingertails. Her shirt is Harper blue, and her skirt has abstract fire lizards along the bottom. The sun is setting behind them, and the colors are vibrant and warm. The picture did an especially good job of depicting a phrase that stuck in my head when I first read Dragonsong, that she was too big to be a proper girl. She's tall and lanky, with a slightly awkward look to her. There's so much personality in the painting, so much attention to detail. It's exactly what I would have expected from Robin Wood, in fact. That's why the picture in PoP is such a let-down for me

Since all kinds of ethnic groups traveled to Pern, it wouldn't be too far off. They would have to make her eyes gray. I think they mention somewhere that she has almond shaped eyes... which are usually considered to be of Asian or Mongolian descent. My grandfather has a cleft in his chin... which my son (his great grandchild) inherited. My other grandfather had classic American Indian features which stems from a liaison/marriage some 150 years ago. I like the idea of some of the Baldwin brothers playing F'lar and F'nor. You could also use Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez. Opinions? ~Michelle

Now dark cloud does sound more like curls or waves than straight. Not to me. I've got hair that's naturally dead straight, and if it's too dry or there's too much static in the air, it definitely has a life of its own. When I permed my hair, the curls tended to keep it together to some extent. When it's dead straight, there's nothing to hold the hairs against one another. Compare a tangle of telephone cords to a handful of straight round cords. Hold a bunch of curly ones in one hand and straight ones in the other. Hold each bunch together at one end, dangle them down, and shake them around. The straight ones can slide around each other all they want, while the telephone cords tend to get tied together and held into a single mass much more quickly. When they describe her hair as having a life of its own, floating around her head or dancing in static, I definitely think first of my hair when it's straight, not my hair when it's curly. And I've had it waist-length both ways, so I know what weight does to it. The straight ones still escape more easily. So there. ;P -Janet <

Ling is a bit ethnic... they had, what, 2500 turns (years) to inter breed? I believe there is some reference in the books that people from certain holds look similar. People looks like they come from a hold. In Dragonsdawn there is a mention that there is little difference in ethnic groups ,Kitti Ping's appearance is described as a throwback to her Asian ancestors. In 2500 turns NEW ethnic groups can form. We have no idea what these groups would look like. and just to add to the argument, someone once told me that Anne had suggested James Earl Jones as a possible Robinton. J'bet God bless those Pagans

She is not personally vain because she cannot appreciate the tremendous charisma she exudes. She does, however, take particular pains and care of her heavy, long black hair. The accompanying picture is of a woman with her hair contained in a braid, but the indications are of hair that is neither straight, nor curly, but instead WAVY.
